Poor Rudolpha!

"Can I borrow Rudolpha for a school project?"

I should have known better. I mean, every fiber of my being was telling me it was a bad idea. I knew I should be saying no, this is Rudolpha, you can't have her, she's Corb's.

I knew all that. I said all that. But instead I replied:

"What do you need Rudolpha for, Theo?"

"We have to do a presentation for Macbeth. I want to put something on top of Rudolpha's head so she can play Macbeth. So, can I do it?"

Well, Rudolpha always has enjoyed the theater, and she certainly does like being the center of attention. And now that he mentioned it, I could kind of see her in Elizabethan garb, with a floppy hat cocked to one side, majestically intoning lines like, "Alas, poor Yorich, I knew him well."

Stupidly, I said yes. I did make Theo promise to take good care of Rudolpha. Made him promise it three times, actually. I'd be really upset if he did anything that damaged her in any way. As it is, the spring to her mouth was broken a while back, and Corb had to do some really clever repair work to get her back to normal.

So it was a bit of surprise to arrive home from work tonight and find Theo standing at the kitchen table with Rudolpha's face entirely wrapped up in duct tape, covered in white paint that was still wet.

"Ummmm...Theo?" Poor Rudolpha. She looked as if she had just returned from a plastic surgeon after having had work done.

Theo smiled, and I could see the dimple showing. "What, what? I told you I was going to use Rudolpha for my school project!"

"Yes, but you only told me you were going to put something on top of her head."

"I never said that."

"Yes, you did!" I shook my head. I knew it was no use fighting about it. "So what is Rudolpha supposed to be?"

"I told you, Macbeth. This is just the first coat. Tomorrow morning, my friend Noah is going to add some color and make her look as though she actually has a face. Don't worry, he's an artist!"

Gulp. Two more days of this ordeal for Rudolpha. I can only hope she survives her first shot at stardom...the lead role in MacBeth. Will success spoil Rudolpha? At the very least, will she make it through in one piece?
