We were at a party together. I had been a bit nervous going because a lot of people at the party knew about the separation, and I feared that we were going to be treated like zoo animals on parade. That was not, of course, the case.
Later in the night, I approached Heather, and she gave me a big hug, and we started talking about the separation, and the kids (she went through a divorce herself), and then she gave me one of her wary, knowledgeable looks and asked, "Okay, so what's REALLY going on?"
And I said, "Well, let's take a walk."
We walked out of the house and over by the cars, in the seclusion of the darkness, and I told her. It wasn't easy, but a hell of a lot easier than it has been. Heather gave me a big hug and said, "I've so happy that you've finally been able to admit that, Ted."
And did I mention that I've always loved Heather?
